Roof Deck for a Geologist

Roof Deck for a Geologist
Our Western Avenue Loft client always had his sights set on developing the building’s roof for additional outdoor space, which is now underway. He’s a Professor of Planetary Geology and a leading research scientist on volcanology. This, of course, invariably leads one to think: hexagons.
Which probably deserves a bit of an explanation.
It starts with lava – thick, extensive, and basaltic. When these flows cool and solidify, they shrink and crack. There’s a bit more to it, but nature efficiently organizes this phase change into polygonal columns, and most often, hexagonal ones. The Giant’s Causeway, pictured here, is but one example.
Varying-height hexagonal columns are enlisted here as pavers, or seating, or steps, or side tables, or in their absence, planting beds. Additional features will include a green roof, further planting, and a shade sail over the hot tub. Lighting will be arranged in such a way that these landscape elements will themselves become light fixtures.
