CLP Woods Run Library

CLP Woods Run Library

$0.00

Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh Woods Run is the second renovation project that Loysen + Kreuthmeier Architects completed for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. Originally constructed in the early 1960’s, the building had been conceived as a “pavilion in the park”, with a cast concrete folded plate roof resting on columns that were independent of the wall enclosure. However, design changes made during the original construction and the subsequent passage of time had not been kind to the building. Full-height brick walls prevented views into and out of the building and isolated it from the neighborhood. Failing mechanical systems and lack of thermal insulation meant that even this small 5,000 square foot facility had high energy costs. The renovation of the facility reconnects the building to its site through the introduction of a glass and aluminum storefront, expanding views into and out of the building. On the interior, a simple floor plan utilizes shelving and loose furniture to define different zones within the public space. Although small inside, the renovated facility now feels expansive and connected to its setting.

With improved mechanical systems, lower energy requirements, and the introduction of daylight and views throughout the space, the new facility has been awarded LEED Silver certification by the United States Green Building Council.

Materials and fabrics in the Children’s Department are bright and colorful, as well as extremely durable. Custom shelving on casters is elivened with quotes from favorite children’s classics. The portable furniture can be rearranged by the librarians for special events and story time.
